On the Edge was a mid-nineties CCG that got caught up and washed out in the post-Magic boom and bust of the medium. Set in the RPG Over the Edge's weird Mediterranean island of Al Amarja, competing conspiracies vie to use the island's population of cloaks, street gangs, mystics, artists and aliens to further their global ambitions. This website is a card database and deckbuilding tool for use with that game.
Using This Website
First of all, be aware: this website is still under development, and while all the major functionality is complete, there's a lot of quality-of-life stuff still to go. Errors may be reported as JSON packets instead of friendly messages, buttons may appear to have done nothing while waiting for a response from the server, that kind of thing. This is a hobby project that already does more than the author needs from it, it's coming but there's no promises on delivery timeframes.
Start at the search page in the top bar. From there you can filter the card database on a number of different criteria to find specific cards. If you want to view the full details of a card, click on its name in the results grid; to filter further to find similar cards you can click on a card type or a trait in the grid to restrict the results to cards matching that type and/or trait. If you want to add the card to a deck, click the button to the right of the grid. Access your in-progress decklist from the icon at the top of the page.
If you create an account, you can save your decklists using the icon in the top-right of the deck builder; these are then available to edit or export to PDF deck lists on the 'Decks' page linked to at the top of the page. Registering doesn't require any personal information, only a username, and the password is only stored hashed. Of course, this is a website about a game (?) in which every conspiracy theory is probably true, so be paranoid: use a password you don't use anywhere else, just in case. Decks can be shared by toggling the / button in your decks list, but presently only logged-in users can view public decks.
About On the Edge
Released between 1994 and 1996 by Trident Inc./Atlas Games, On the Edge was designed by Jonathan Tweet and John Nephew, with one card set also contributed by Robin Laws. The bottom somewhat-notoriously dropped out of the CCG market around the time of OnTE's cancellation, and – related or otherwise – despite being a standout gem in its field, there's still sealed, brand-new packs available today for incredibly reasonable prices. On the Edge stands out from its contemporaries for a few reasons: it's a much more tactical game than the typical line-em-up duel game that persists to this day; it actually works (and some say highly benefits from) being played with more than just two players; and it's relatively playable out of the box. If your interest is piqued, given the prices cards are available direct from the publisher these days, EdgeLord recommends buying a box of boosters or a Burger Box and giving it a try!
The Atlas Games On the Edge page contains all the official information about the game still extant on the web, including the following notable resources:
- The On the Edge rules in PDF form.
- An easy way to jump into the game with some friends.
- A set of optional extra rules for two-player games.
- Product listing for boxes of starter decks and standard edition boosters.
- Product listing for CutUps Project boosters - a chaotic expansion with weird character abilities and game-changing environmentals.
- Product listing for Shadows boosters - an expansion of criminals, down-and-outs and other subterfuge.
- Product listing for Arcana boosters - an expansion of magic, psychics, demons, and other relatively mundane occurrences.
- Product listing for the Burger Box - a pack of starter decks and boosters from each series to kickstart a player's or a group's OnTE collection.
- The Over the Edge RPG is the setting for On the Edge, and recently received an expansive third edition. In keeping with the setting's general themes of misinformation and conspiracy each edition of the game subtly (or not-so-subtly) contradicts the others, leaving nobody all that sure what if any canonical information exists.
